Highlights from the 2019 NAFEM Show

large white building hosting the NAFEM 2019 show in Orlando florida

Datec recently attended the NAFEM Food Service and Equipment Supply Show in Orlando, where we had the opportunity to discuss our latest heating innovations for food equipment.

NAFEM is North America’s largest food equipment manufacturer event, and an industry leader in providing comprehensive coverage of the trends, technologies, and issues facing the global foodservice experience. The show focuses on new solutions and innovations for the future.

Here are some event highlights:

• As the market for food delivery continues to grow, delivering food to customers with the same quality they experience at the restaurant will be a game changer for delivery companies. Our thick film technology allows heating elements to be thin and lightweight, which is ideal for food delivery bags and boxes. This flexibility also allows us to further customize the size and shape of our heaters.

• Heat-up speed and energy conservation emerged as a growing priority for manufacturers. With fast heat-up speed and low thermal mass, Datec’s heating solutions offer uniform, reliable heat and save energy costs while doing so.

• Attendees consistently stressed the need for improved performance in their hot food holding equipment. We discussed how Datec’s space-saving thick film pastes can be printed directly onto substrates, allowing for even and uniform heat without hot or cold spots. Consistent, uniform heat can dramatically improve the quality of food.

Thick film technology helps those in the food equipment manufacturing industry stay ahead of their competition, integrate new technology into their products, increase performance, and reduce costs. Based on the trends and concerns discussed during the show, we’re excited by the prospect of Datec thick film being used by more and more leading food equipment companies.

We had a great time at the 2019 NAFEM Show, and look forward to sharing our innovations at the next show!

Featured Solution: Portable Cancer Treatment Device for Underdeveloped Countries

At Datec, we design, test, and manufacture application-specific, high-performance heating solutions for our clients.

aluminum combined with Datec are heaters

Aluminum is an excellent thermal conductor which, when combined with Datec’s area heaters, allows for exceptional thermal uniformity across the treatment area.

Recently, we developed an aluminum-based heater for a lightweight, battery-powered device used to treat cancer in underdeveloped parts of the world.

The client required a medical device that could be used to thermally destroy cancerous cells. Traditionally, such lesions have been treated through cryotherapy, in which a probe reaches the target cells and the lesion is frozen, thereby killing the tissue.

Cryotherapy technology relies on a constant supply of refrigerant gas, which is expensive and difficult to transport, rendering it unfeasible in many underdeveloped parts of the world where the procedure is needed most.

The result was a portable and lightweight device with a long battery life that could provide this life-saving treatment.

Our ability to print thick film directly onto aluminum was essential for the compact requirements of this device.

Will Parts Manufacturing and Research into New Technology Save the Canadian Automotive Industry?

General Motors (GM) announced last week that the company will stop making cars in Oshawa, ON after next year and will cease production on many of their gas-powered sedans. Although the latter announcement received less media attention in Canada due largely to the closure of the Oshawa plant, this news reinforces GM’s shift from gas-powered vehicles to electric and autonomous electric vehicles.

The Canadian Automotive Industry Isn’t Dying, It’s Changing.

The new reality for automakers is the balancing act involved with meeting the present demand for gas-powered cars and trucks while at the same time ensuring they’re prepared for the future demand for electric and autonomous electric vehicles.

GM’s restructuring that eliminates gas-powered car models in favour of electric and autonomous electric vehicles is part of a larger trend in the automotive industry.

Canada has been shifting in the zero-emission direction for several years. When GM announced their plan to substantially boost their research and development departmentin 2016, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne symbolically arrived at the facility in a zero-emission electric Chevy Bolt.

After their arrival, GM announced that they would be hiring 1,000 Canadian software engineers tasked with developing software for electric and autonomous electric vehicles.

Can Ontario Satisfy the Next Generation of Automotive Jobs?

The answer is jobs in automotive technology and parts.

Parts manufacturers work with companies like Datec to develop new technology to stay one step ahead of the rapid changes in the automotive industry.
Datec integrates its high powered heating system into heat exchanger devices that are compact, lightweight, and are made specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles.

GM alone spends over $3 billion annually on major and minor parts and tools from Ontario suppliers. That money supports thousands of Ontario jobs beyond GM.

The $6 billion in anticipated savings from closing the Oshawa plant, as well as the four other plants across North America, will go directly to the research and development of electric and autonomous electric vehicles.

Companies like GM will need to pour money and resources into engineering and high-tech jobs compete with the Teslas of the world – a need Canada can satisfy.

Some of the highest performing software in current autonomous vehicles, for example, comes from BlackBerry’s offshoot company QNX, based in Waterloo. But no matter how advanced the technology of the next generation vehicles get, these vehicles will still need battery warmers, cabin heaters, doors, windows, engines, and body panels.

The next generation of electric and autonomous electric automobiles will bring with it a whole new market of jobs developing new technology and supplying parts.
Electric and autonomous electric vehicles will require an entirely different set of components, and these engineers and parts manufacturers will need to design and build them. They will need to design motors instead of combustion engines, batteries instead of gasoline, and accessories and parts to go with them.

Parts manufacturers work with companies like Datec to develop new technology to stay one step ahead of the rapid changes in the automotive industry.
