Datec Coating Technologies Thick-Film Resistor Drives Improved Colder Climate EV Performance
Ontario invests in a superior, all-aluminum solution for heating electric vehicles, through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN)
Toronto, Ontario – 17th March, 2026 – Datec Coating Technologies, a Mississauga-based heating technology company, has developed a self-limiting (PTC) thick-film resistor technology that will improve EV performance in cold weather conditions, with the support of the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN). This innovative solution advances Datec’s work on next generation heating technology for cabin and battery thermal management in electric vehicles. The project had a total investment of over $1 million, with $310,000 from the Ontario government through OVIN.
“With the support from OVIN and the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI) and other visionary partners, we’ve developed new technologies and also enhanced the benefits of our proprietary solutions that have proven success across a range of industries.” said Datec CEO, Dominic Talalla. He added, “We have extensive experience with automotive thermal solutions and are committed to delivering best-in -class solutions for the EV market.”
Founded in Kingston, Ontario in 1995, Datec is a materials technology company with patented printed-on, thick-film heating solutions that dramatically improve the performance of devices where weight, efficiency and compact design are important.
“Ontario companies are accelerating the shift to electrification by improving EV performance and reliability,” said Raed Kadri, Head of OVIN. “Datec’s self-limiting (PTC) thick-film resistor technology is an important example of the leading-edge solutions Ontario companies are developing, ensuring that our province is driving the shift to an electric future.”
According to Rudolf Kaiser, Vice President/Head of Global BU Food Preparation at E.G.O.-Group, one of the world’s leading suppliers of the appliance industry and a partner in the project, “It was an honour to participate in this challenging, interesting project in which we have achieved promising results for the future.”
“Datec’s technology demonstrates how Ontario-based innovation is being applied to practical EV solutions,” said Claudia Krywiak, President and CEO of the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). “Through OVIN, we’re proud to support companies in bringing made-in-Ontario technologies to market that strengthen vehicle performance, reliability, and safety.”
Datec’s newly developed self-limiting (PTC) thick-film resistor technology ensures product safety without compromising reliability. This significant innovation was granted a U.S. patent in May 2025. Coupled with its newly developed dielectric, Datec’s technology offers a superior, all-aluminum solution for heating EVs. The company holds 10 patents and has 9 patents pending.
